MARIINSKY
THEATRE (KIROV)
The opera and ballet companies are famous all over the world. The
repertoire includes classics such as Tchaikovskys Eugene Onegin and "Swan
Lake" and works by Mozart, Verdi and Rossini. Other popular productions are
Massenets ballet Manon, the operas Don Juan by Mozart, War and Peace
by Prokofiev and Wagners Das Rheingold. The latest productions are
Tchaikovskys The Nutcracker (with scenery by Mikhail Shemyakin),
Puccinis La Boheme and Verdis Macbeth.
International art festival Stars of White Nights (from 30 May to 30 June).
MUSSORGSKY THEATRE
Second largest musical stage in St.Petersburg, whose repertoire includes
world classics of opera and ballet. Among the works in the programme are the
operas Prince Igor by Borodin, Verdis La Traviata, Othello,
Requiem, Bizets Carmen, Rossinis The Barber of Seville and the
ballet Cinderella by Prokofiev.
ALEXANDRINSKY THEATRE
This the oldest drama theatre in Russia, was founded by decree of the
Empress Elizabeth in 1756. The majority of Russia classical dramas had their
first performances there.
Most recent ballet: Giselle, The Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Red
Giselle.
