The
town of Lomonosov (formerly Oranienbaum) with its palaces and
gardens lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, 40 km
from St. Petersburg. Here you will see genuine works of
18th-century masters, such as the fortress of Peterstadt with
Peter the Third's Palace and the Gate of Honour and of course
the famous Chinese Palace and the grand Toboggan Hill as well as
the marvellous parks on the sea-shore. The Chinese palace has a
special charm about it, the charm which allows antiquities to
pass down to us in all their beauty and to stand as the living
witnesses of their epoch. Alexander Benois, a well-known artist
and art expert, had this to say about this unique piece of
architecture: "The Chinese Palace is the only one of its
kind, a work of art so integral and harmonious, a toy so smart
and elegant, that one cannot help admiring it."
We
invite you to come and see it for yourself. |
